Yarn Requirements
What is the best yarn for crochet dishcloth?
The best type of yarn for crochet dishcloths is 100% cotton yarn because it’s easier to wash and keeps the shape well. Cotton is definitely my favorite yarn to use for crochet kitchen items. Acrylic yarn tends to stretch a lot and tends to lump after multiple washes.
I recommend using Light Worsted #3 = DK or Medium #4 = Worsted weight yarn for extra thickness.
I used 3 different colors to make 3 dishcloths:
- yardage per one dishcloth: 50-60g = cca 105-126m (115-138 yards)
- Light Worsted #3 = DK
- 100% cotton yarn
- Patons 100% Cotton DK – color yellow (02745), blue (02729), jade (02726)

Crochet Dishcloth Free Pattern – Step by Step Instructions
Construction
- You will crochet the dishcloth in rows until you have achieved the desired size. You can go for different sizes such as rectangular dishcloth instead of a square one…the choice is yours! 🙂
- You will be using the Suzette stitch pattern, which means you will single crochet and then double crochet into the same stitch, skip one stitch and then single crochet and double crochet into the next stitch, skip one stitch and so on – I will explain in detail later on in this pattern
- Suzette stitch creates a great texture and is reversible which means your dishcloth will look identical on both sides.

Written Pattern
FCH (4mm crochet hook or G/6): Chain 46 – chain more if you would like a wider dishcloth or less if you would like a smaller one, however always chain even number of stitches
R1 (4mm crochet hook or G/6): SL ST into each ST across (into back bump only) starting from the 2nd CH from the hook, CH1 and TO {45 excl CH1 at the end}
R2 (use 3mm crochet hook or C/2 from R2 onwards):
- SC into 2nd CH from the hook, i.e. the first stitch of the row
- DC into the same ST
- skip one ST
- SC into next ST, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
- SC into next ST, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
- continue to crochet across the row taking turns between SC & DC into the same ST and skipping the following ST
- SC in the last ST of the row
- CH1 and TO {45 excl CH1 at the end}
- note: don’t worry if your dishcloth is a bit twisted at this stage, it will flatten out as you crochet along

R3 onwards: repeat row R2 until you have achieved the desired size – my dishcloth is cca 22.5 cm (9″) long, which works out as 39 rows (this may differ depending on your yarn tension)

Last row:
- crochet as per R2
- when you work on the last row, you should finish on the same side as your starting tail from the foundation chain at the bottom of your work
- if you want to crochet the hanging loop then finish the row with 1x SC into the last ST, do not CH1 at the end
- if you don’t want to crochet the hanging loop then finish the row with 3x SC into the last ST, do not CH1 at the end
- don’t FO and don’t cut the yarn off – you will now continue to crochet the edging and hanging loop
How to Crochet the Edging and Hanging Loop
Step 1: continue to crochet from where you finished in the last row
Step 2: CH15 and SC into the last ST of the latest row (Pic 1 & 2) – if you don’t want to crochet the loop then skip this step

Step 3: you will now SC across the side into the row ends going from the loop towards the foundation chain…1x SC into each single row (Pic 3) and 3x SC into the last row
The edging should be nice and flat, but if it is too tight (curls up) try to use a slightly larger hook or loosen up your tension. If the edging is too loose (wavy) try to use a slightly smaller hook or increase your tension.
Step 4: 1x SC into each chain of the foundation chain while carrying the starting tail with you to hide it inside the stitches, 3x SC into the last CH
Step 5: you will now SC across the side into the row ends again which will take you back to the last row…1x SC into each single row and 3x SC into the last row
Step 6: 1x SC into each ST of the last row which will take you back to the hanging loop, 25x SC into the loop and SL ST into the first SC you worked into the row ends on the side (Pic 4) and INV FO. And finally weave the yarn end in.

If you didn’t crochet the loop, then finish off by doing an INV FO once you reach the first SC you made into the corner when you started the edging and weave the yarn end in

How to Change Colors
If you would like to change colors and create a stripy dishcloth you can follow the steps below:
– when working on the last SC at the end of a row: insert your hook into the last stitch; then yarn over and pull through (you will have two loops left on the hook)
– yarn over again but this time using the new color and pull through the remaining two loops
– then CH1 using the new color and TO
– continue to crochet the next row as per R2

How to Count Rows When Crocheting the Suzette Stitch
It is easy to count the rows when working on this stitch because each row creates a line of visible clusters (cluster = SC and DC into the same ST).
