Mason Jar Crochet Cover Pattern – Before You Get Started
Pattern Notes
Skill level: begginer to intermediate crochet skills and knowledge
Terminology: US crochet terminology
Finished size: this will vary depending on the size of the mason jar used – this pattern is easily customizable so you can make crochet mason jar covers in lots of different sizes
Gauge: not important as you can customise the size based on your tension and size of hook
Recommended Yarn
I recommend using Light Worsted #3 = DK or Fine Sport #2 = 4 ply yarn weight because worsted weight yarn would be too bulky. Cotton yarn will work the best as it keeps the shape nicely, doesn’t stretch as much as acrylic and is easier to clean.
I used some scrap yarn in various colors to make 3 mason jar cozies:
– Light Worsted #3 = DK
– 100% cotton yarn
– James C Brett It’s Pure Cotton DK
– yardage per one crochet jar cover: this will again depend on the size of your jar but assume 25 g / 59 yds (54 m) per 8.5oz (250ml) jam jar
Yarn substitution:
US Suppliers – 100% cotton DK – WeCrochet Animation DK
UK Suppliers – 100% cotton DK – Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK
Tools Needed
Crochet hook size: 4 mm hook = G/6 if using Light Worsted #3 = DK (refer to the instructions on your yarn label if using different yarn weight)
– scissors

Written Pattern
How to Crochet the Jar Cover Base
You will crochet the base in a continuous round using single crochet stitches. This means you won’t connect the rounds using a slip stitch but instead you will continue to crochet in a spiral. This way you will avoid having a visible seam on your work.
If you wonder how to crochet in a spiral, it’s actually pretty straightforward. After you complete a round, you will simply continue to crochet in the next stitch of the next round. But I would recommend using a stitch marker to keep a track of your rounds and stitches because it’s easy to loose the count.
You will start the bottom circle of the base (which will be underneath the jar) with a magic ring and will continue to crochet in a round until you have reached the edge. The number of rounds you will need to crochet to reach the edge will depend on the size of the jar you will be using. I have written up to 20 rounds below but you will more than likely need to crochet less rounds.
R1: MR – 6 x SC into the ring {6} – watch this step by step video tutorial on How to crochet a magic ring
R2: INC in each ST around {12}
R3: (SC in next ST, INC) x 6 {18}
R4: SC in next ST, INC, (SC in next 2 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next ST {24}
R5: (SC in next 3 STs, INC) x 6 {30}
R6: SC in next 2 STs, INC, (SC in next 4 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 2 STs {36}
R7: (SC in next 5 STs, INC) x 6 {42}
R8: SC in next 3 STs, INC, (SC in next 6 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 3 STs {48}
R9: (SC in next 7 STs, INC) x 6 {54} – I am using a 8.5oz (250ml) jam jar in my photos so I only needed to crochet 9 rounds to reach the edge
R10: SC in next 4 STs, INC, (SC in next 8 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 4 STs {60}
R11: (SC in next 9 STs, INC) x 6 {66}
R12: SC in next 5 STs, INC, (SC in next 10 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 5 STs {72}
R13: (SC in next 11 STs, INC) x 6 {78}
R14: SC in next 6 STs, INC, (SC in next 12 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 6 STs {84}
R15: (SC in next 13 STs, INC) x 6 {90}
R16: SC in next 7 STs, INC, (SC in next 14 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 7 STs {96}
R17: (SC in next 15 STs, INC) x 6 {102}
R18: SC in next 8 STs, INC, (SC in next 16 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 8 STs {108}
R19: (SC in next 17 STs, INC) x 6 {114}
R20: SC in next 9 STs, INC, (SC in next 18 STs, INC) x 5, SC in next 9 STs {120}
Once you have reached the edge you will start curling the base upwards around the edge of the jar. You will continue to crochet in a round using single crochet stitches. Four rounds should be enough but feel free to add more rounds if you would like your base to be taller.
R1 – R3 (2 rounds): SC in each ST around
R4: SC in each ST around and SL ST into first ST of the next round to complete the base

How to Crochet the Main Body of the Jar Cover
Once you have completed the cover base you will continue to crochet in a round using the shell stitch, which creates a beautiful textured pattern. But this time you will join the rounds with a slip stitch.
R1:
– crochet from where you finished with the base
– chain 2x (this will count as a DC), skip 2 STs, 2x DC into next ST, chain 1x, 2x DC into the same ST, skip 2 STs
– (1x DC, skip 2 STs, 2x DC into next ST, chain 1x, 2x DC into the same ST, skip 2 STs) – repeat the sequence in brackets all the way round
– SL ST into the chain 2 space to join the round (Pic 1 & 2)
R2:
– insert your hook behind the chain of 2 you just slip stitched into (Pic 3), SC and chain 1x (Pic 4) – you will notice later on that this will look like a FPDC
– or if you prefer you can just chain 2 instead of the above step
– 2x DC into CH1 space, chain 1x, 2x DC into the same CH1 space
– 1x FPDC = yarn over, insert your hook behind the post of the next DC (Pic 5), yarn over and pull the yarn behind the post (Pic 6), you will have 3 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops (Pic 7), you will have 2 loops left on the hook, yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops on the hook (Pic 8)
– 2x DC into CH1 space, chain 1x, 2x DC into the same CH1 space
– (1x FPDC, 2x DC into CH1 space, chain 1x, 2x DC into the same CH1 space) – repeat the sequence in brackets all the way round
– SL ST into the next space to join the round
R3:
– insert your hook behind the SC and CH1 post (just like you did behind the chain of 2 in the previous round), and then SC and chain 1x
– or if you prefer you can just chain 2 instead of the above step
– 2x DC into CH1 space, chain 1x, 2x DC into the same CH1 space
– (1x FPDC, 2x DC into CH1 space, chain 1x, 2x DC into the same CH1 space) – repeat the sequence in brackets all the way round- SL ST into the next space to join the round
R4 onwards:
– repeat round R3 until you have achieved the desired height of your crochet cozy
– you can crochet all the way to the top of the jar or or you can leave some of the jar exposed
Last round:
– you will slip stitch into front loops all the way round while skipping the FPDC stitches – this way the jar cover will be a bit tighter around the neck of the jar
– SL ST into FLO of the next 2 DC STs, SL ST into FLO of CH1, SL ST into FLO of the next 2 DC STs, skip FPDC and continue this way all the way round
– INV FO to join the last round and weave the yarn end in – watch this step by step video tutorial on How to crochet invisible fasten off
And that’s it. Your mason jar cover is now completed. ๐
